SCIENCE subjects at SMK Nanga Medamit should be reintroduced to offer opportunities for students who wish to pursue them.

In making this call, Datuk Paulus Palu Gumbang (GPS-Batu Danau) said that SMK Nanga Medamit was the only secondary school in the Batu Danau constituency.

“Therefore, almost all the students are children from rural areas. I have been informed that since 2016, the teaching of pure science subjects such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Additional Mathematics has been discontinued.

“The absence of these pure science subjects undoubtedly affects the opportunities for children from this area to further their studies at the matriculation level and pursue STEM-related fields in the future.

“By not offering these subjects, the relevant authorities are indirectly limiting their career paths,” he said this during his debate in support of the Supply Bill 2025 here today (Nov 15).

Following that, Paulus expressed his sincere request and hoped that the responsible parties would reintroduce these subjects to provide opportunities for those who wished to take them.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to request that the Sarawak Education Enhancement Programme (SEEP), which will be introduced in 2025, include SMK Nanga Medamit in the programme,” he said.

He also conveyed his gratitude to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government for their concern  for children of Sarawak studying in public and private institutions of higher learning (IPTA and IPTS) by providing RM500 book vouchers per student, free laptops, and special financial aid in the form of    RM1,200 allowance for students from families with a per capita income of RM1,500.00 per month or less.

“This programme will certainly help ease the financial burdens of the parents and students involved,” he added.
