KUCHING: Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Authority (SHEDA) expressed strong support for the call by the Minister of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development to improve the efficiency of recruitment processes for foreign workers.
Its advisor Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok described Datuk Seri Stephen Rundi Utom’s proposal to reduce the processing time for recruitment from 90 days to 45 days as a timely and necessary move that would benefit key sectors in Sarawak, including food, commodities, construction, and development.
“This proposed improvement will significantly aid industries that share similar approval processes by expediting the hiring of much-needed manpower,” he said in a statement today (Jan 9).
He also highlighted the potential role of Sarawak’s new airline in facilitating the recruitment process, particularly for Indonesian workers.
Sim said the airline could offer direct or chartered flights to streamline the arrival of workers, providing the industries with the human resources needed to meet increasing demands.
“With the establishment of Sarawak Airline, we have an excellent opportunity to simplify worker recruitment while addressing the workforce shortages across our growing industries,” he added.
He emphasised that ensuring an adequate and skilled workforce is essential for achieving the goals outlined in Sarawak’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS).
“As we strive to become a developed state by 2030, this collaborative effort will strengthen Sarawak’s economic growth and development,” Sim said.
