KUCHING: The Friendly Neighbourhood (KJM) initiative needs to be improved to match international standards, said Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunications, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

He said the KJM initiative is being emphasised in communities abroad, not just at the state or national level.

“We need to think outside the box and take innovative steps so that the roles played by all leaders within KJM contribute to strengthening the local community.

“By doing this, we can empower our communities, especially local residents, to align with the urban population in other developed countries,” he said.

He said this during the closing of the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) KJM Empowerment Workshop 2025, held at Damai Beach Resort on Monday (Nov4).

He added that DBKU is currently aligning its administrative efforts with the ongoing development in the state, following the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“DBKU emphasises two key areas that align with PCDS 2030—social inclusivity and environmental sustainability.

“This is in line with our current initiatives, which aim to involve individuals of all ages in organised activities while ensuring environmental sustainability.

“This workshop, in particular, is aimed at strengthening the capacity of local residents to create safer, cleaner, and more harmonious neighbourhoods that include all age groups.

“Furthermore, DBKU intends to engage the community actively in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of their neighbourhoods, promoting a sense of togetherness and social unity,” he explained.

He expressed confidence that the workshop would enhance the synergy between DBKU and the local community, equipping everyone to fulfil their responsibilities more effectively.

“Through the exchange of knowledge and experience at this workshop, it is hoped that everyone will be able to provide better, more sincere, and more approachable services to the public,” he said.
