KUCHING: There is an urgent need to enhance representation and support for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), said Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

The Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development said this during her speech at the 2025 International Day of Women and Girls in Science celebration, held at Swinburne University yesterday (Feb 11).

Fatimah highlighted the progress made by women in STEM while acknowledging the challenges that persist.

“The story of women in STEM is one of resilience and courage. Women have made extraordinary contributions to science and innovation, often overcoming significant barriers.

“However, we must recognise that challenges remain. Women and girls are still underrepresented in these fields, and societal norms and biases continue to limit their opportunities,” she said.

Fatimah stressed that addressing gender disparity in STEM is not solely a women’s issue but a societal concern requiring collective action. She reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to bridging the gap through policies and programmes aimed at empowering women and girls, ensuring access to education, and creating pathways to leadership.

However, she noted that policy interventions alone are insufficient, calling for a shift in societal attitudes towards women in science.

“It is imperative that we cultivate an environment where women’s contributions to STEM are recognised, valued, and promoted,” she added.

The event featured distinguished speakers who are trailblazers in their respective STEM fields. Their insights and experiences served as inspiration for young women aspiring to careers in science and technology.

Fatimah also underscored the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and government in fostering a supportive ecosystem for women in STEM. She encouraged young women to embrace their potential, reminding them that their creativity and determination could drive groundbreaking solutions in areas such as climate change, healthcare, and technological innovation.

“To the young women present today, let me say this: Your ideas, your creativity, and your determination are the building blocks of a brighter future. Do not let fear or doubt hold you back.

“You are capable of shaping solutions to the challenges our world faces — from climate change to healthcare, from technological innovation to sustainable development,” she said.
