KOTA SAMARAHAN: More officers specialising in psychiatry, psychology, and counselling are needed to support individuals facing psychological challenges.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, emphasised the crucial role these professionals play in managing victims’ emotional states and ensuring their wellbeing.
“Based on the outcomes observed after deploying the One-Stop Social Support Center (PSSS) in Lundu, we found that many individuals face difficulties sharing their problems.
“Many villagers have met with PSSS counsellors, often to the point of tears, opening up about their struggles to professional counsellors.
“This highlights the critical importance of counsellors. Therefore, we aim to prevent unwanted incidents within the community, whether in the state, the country, or even abroad,” she said during a townhall session at the Toleransi Sifar Keganasan @ Advokasi Antigangguan Seksual (Zero Tolerance for Violence @ Anti-Sexual Harassment Advocacy) programme held at Dewan Arena Gemilang, UNIMAS, today (Dec 12).
In light of this, Nancy also called for the development of more such professionals in the future.
According to her, these careers not only support local communities but also offer potential for good income as professional roles.
“We know many people require counselling services, regardless of gender.
“Therefore, we hope these professionals can serve as a safe avenue for the community to express their concerns,” she said.
