MIRI: Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew has expressed grave concern over the escalating coastal erosion along Jalan Pantai Lutong, worsened by the recent king tide phenomenon.

Ting, who is also the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, has formally appealed to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof to expedite erosion mitigation projects to prevent further deterioration.

Upon his arrival here on Wednesday (Jan 15), Ting conducted a site visit to the affected areas along Lutong Beach.

During the visit, he stressed the urgency of implementing long-term solutions to mitigate coastal disasters, particularly calling for immediate allocation of funds to construct wave breakers.

He noted that the RM45 million flood mitigation project approved in 2022 had reached its tender closing date.

“I will closely monitor the project’s progress to ensure its prompt implementation in addressing flooding and erosion threats in Lutong.

“The worsening effects of climate change in recent years have caused rising sea levels and heightened erosion risks along our coasts,” he said in a statement.

He added that the issues not only damage vital road infrastructure but also pose safety risks to residents in coastal areas.

Ting reiterated that the construction of wave breakers is an essential measure to effectively combat the erosion problem.

He highlighted that large waves have caused significant damage to Jalan Pantai Lutong, further stressing the need for relevant departments to expedite the project so that repair works can commence swiftly.

In the meantime, Ting commended the Miri City Council for its proactive measures, including placing warning signs to caution road users and deploying staff to clean up debris, such as wood fragments and small rocks, left by the king tide.

“These efforts are crucial in ensuring road safety while longer-term solutions are put in place,” he said.

Ting also emphasised that the flood and erosion mitigation initiatives would incorporate multiple protective measures to safeguard residents and critical infrastructure in the Lutong coastal area.
