KUCHING: The Youth and Sports Ministry has announced the Cabinet’s approval for the establishment of the organising committee for the 34th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the 15th ASEAN Para Games, both scheduled to be hosted in Malaysia in 2027.
In a Facebook statement posted by Youth and Sports Minister, Hannah Yeoh, she said that the approval was granted during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The organising efforts will be led by the newly formed Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) secretariat, which will oversee the execution of these two major regional multi-sport events.
The committee will be chaired by Yeoh and supported by 16 sub-committees involving various ministries, agencies and sports bodies, ensuring broad national involvement.
The MASOC secretariat, which will be responsible for implementing the direction and decisions made by the organising committee, is set to appoint its chief executive officer and chief operating officer soon to further drive these efforts.
Sarawak will be one of four states hosting the 2027 SEA Games, besides Johor, Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Malaysia last hosted the SEA Games in 2017, and before that had hosted the biennial event in 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989 and 2001.
In attendance with Yeoh were Tan Sri Dr Mohamad Norza Zakaria, President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Dr Nagulendran Kangayatarasu, Secretary-General of the Youth and Sports Ministry, and Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister.
