KUCHING: Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok says he is saddened by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as prime minister, which has undoubtedly created uncertainty in the country.

The Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Sheda) Kuching chairman highlighted that the main priority in the present situation was to manage the pandemic in order to protect lives and economy.

“Many business sectors were severely affected by continuous spike in cases since March 2020 and we are only starting to recover from the most recent lockdown in June, thanks to the excellent vaccination roll out in Sarawak.”

He mentioned that many businesses were worried by the uncertainty created from the resignation, on whether or not Muhyiddin’s present policies, economic assistance would be continued.

“This will hamper confidence in business and economic recovery in Malaysia,” he said on Monday (Aug 16).

On another note, Sim expressed his gratitude for the rapid immunisation programme in Sarawak.

“In Sarawak, we are blessed that we have achieved herd immunity in our vaccination rollout where 80.9 per cent of Sarawakians have already received two doses of the vaccine whereas 88.8 per cent have received at least the first dose as of Aug 14.”

He hoped that the new government would continue to accelerate the vaccination programme for all states to achieve herd immunity by October and to continue providing economic assistance.

“Our greatest hope is that the new PM will be as cooperative and as caring as Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“We hope that he would have strong support to help Malaysia ride through the pandemic and to restore our livelihood with as little as possible collateral damage to the economy.”
