KAPIT: The Burie embroidery art, one of Sarawak’s unique cultural heritages, is seen as having great potential to be promoted as a high-value tourism product.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Deputy Minister, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, stated that the government is committed to supporting efforts to preserve and promote Sarawak’s craft arts through various craft industry development initiatives.
He also encouraged craft entrepreneurs to leverage digital technologies such as e-commerce and online marketing to expand their market reach.
“Burie embroidery is not just a cultural heritage but also a valuable asset that can become a tourism attraction.
“We want to see more craft entrepreneurs succeed, not only domestically but also on the global stage,” he said in his opening speech at the Burie Embroidery Workshop held here on Saturday.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining the continuity of this valuable heritage amid modern development.
“In our eagerness to pursue progress, we must not forget the heritage that defines our identity.
“It must continue to be championed so that it remains relevant and appreciated by future generations,” he explained.
As part of efforts to empower the local craft industry, a special workshop on Burie embroidery was held with the support of the Sarawak Craft Council.
The workshop plays a significant role in ensuring the continued growth of this heritage art.
The programme aims to expose participants to Burie embroidery techniques while helping craft practitioners enhance their competitiveness in both local and international industries.
This workshop not only provided a learning platform for the participants but also created opportunities for discussions with other craft practitioners.
