KUCHING: A special Sarawak Day celebration was held at the Bidayuh historical and eco-tourism centre of Bung Bratak today.

Bung Bratak Heritage association chairman Datuk Peter Minos said that the Sarawak Day celebration at Bung Bratak was attended by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) medical students, members of the public and surrounding Bidayuh villagers.

During the event, there was the raising of Sarawak flag and the singing of the state anthem.

Minos said Sarawakians must always respect and honour the date, July 22, 1963, the day when Sarawak got out of British colonialism and domination.

“It was also the day when Sarawakians won liberty and freedom from foreign control and subjugation. It was truly a great and momentous day.

“Sarawakians must not forget those who struggled for the independence of Sarawak, especially Tun Abang Haji Openg, the first governor and Tan Sri Stephen Kalong Ningkan, the first chief minister. Honour them eternally,” he said in a statement.

Minos said for 60 years since 1963, Sarawakians had toiled and struggled for their beloved Sarawak and made it what it is today, united and progressive, harmonious and stable and well led by current Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He added that, as of now and given the current highly vigorous economic and social development, Sarawak is definitely poised to be an advanced state and most probably economically and socially well developed by 2030, enjoying racial peace and harmony.

“Sarawak will surely be a class on its own and a highly valued jewel in Malaysia,” he said.
