SERIAN: Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus has called on Pan Borneo to address the pressing issue of non-functional streetlights along the KM63 section of the Kuching-Serian highway.

Despite the presence of lamp poles along the highway, he expressed his concern and urged relevant authorities to take prompt action.

“The lamp posts are in place along KM63 of Jalan Kuching-Serian, but there is no light.

“Why hasn’t Pan Borneo fixed this issue? We need them to expedite the process,” he said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune.

This appeal for action follows a series of accidents, including a fatal incident on Thursday (Sept 21), where one person lost their life at the scene.

Additionally, on the same night, a collision involving two vehicles occurred, fortunately without any reported injuries.

Not only that, earlier this year, a fatal accident tragically took the life of a motorcyclist in the same area, specifically at P-Junction Munggu Limo.

John emphasised the importance of public responsibility, saying that the public need to adhere to regulations and safety measures.

“When accidents happen, we can’t simply point fingers and blame others,” he asserted.

He stressed that resolving the problem of non-functional streetlights is essential for ensuring road safety along the Pan Borneo highway.

As such, he further explained that the Public Works Department (JKR) previously inspected the area and confirmed the presence of streetlights.

However, after his follow-up, he said they indicated that they would conduct further monitoring.

“In Serian, especially in the Bukit Semuja area, fatal accidents have been all too common.

“Our hope is that improved lighting will enhance safety for all road users and reduce the risk of accidents in our area,” he added.
