SIBU: The Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project area has now been expanded from 497 acres to 830 acres, according to Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.
The Bukit Assek assemblyman stated that the additional area encompasses riverbanks and three swampy areas, and it has been approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“The expansion aims to ensure more comprehensive development with systematic infrastructure planning and a master plan.
“The redevelopment of Bukit Assek was announced last year but the full details will be disclosed by the relevant authorities in the first quarter of 2025.
“The project is now entering its third phase, which involves integrated design and development to meet long-term needs,” he said during the media appreciation dinner last night (Jan 20).
He added that the redevelopment of Bukit Assek is part of the state government’s effort to develop Sibu holistically in line with sustainable development initiatives.
“The project is also expected to empower the local economy by creating job opportunities and attracting more investments to the area.”
He stressed that the project reflects the government’s commitment to providing the best facilities for the people while also creating a more conducive living environment in Sibu.
As such, Chieng hopes the development can commence as soon as possible while ensuring that all information related to the project is transparently shared with Sibu residents.
Meanwhile, on other developments in the Bukit Assek constituency, he said that a new road will be constructed to connect Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce with Jalan Oya via Jalan Bukit Lima Forest Reserve.
“The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion in Sibu and improve accessibility for residents in this area.”
On the collaboration between the government and the private sector for the cancer treatment centre and cardiac satellite centre proposed by Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Chieng expressed his full support.
“The establishment of these centres will make it more convenient for local residents, especially those who previously had to travel to Kuching for treatment.
“Sibu’s strategic location makes it an ideal choice for these centres, not only for Sarawak residents but also for people from Sabah, Indonesia and Brunei.”
He added that the establishment of the cancer and cardiac satellite centres in Sibu would help reduce costs and travel time to Kuching.
“With these centres in place, specialists can come to Sibu to perform procedures, providing significant benefits to residents in central Sarawak,” he noted.
