KUCHING: Building a caring society is not solely the responsibility of the government or corporations, but a collective effort by everyone, says Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor pointed out the essence of support lies in the care shown, rather than the amount received.

“After the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen many corporations step forward to assist underprivileged families.

Wee fields questions from the press.

“This is in line with Sarawak’s mission to ensure no one is left behind,” he said when speaking to reporters after officiating the Sports Toto Chinese New Year (CNY) Ang Pow Donation Campaign 2025, here today (Jan 18).

He commended the inclusive spirit of the campaign, noting that people of all races participated in the event.

“This annual event by Sports Toto is for our elderly. The private sector’s contribution is very important, especially as we address the needs of an ageing population.

“And this isn’t just about the Chinese community. Everyone is represented here, which reflects how we in Sarawak share our festivals and joys across all races.

“Helping one another to ensure that everyone has a stable income, a high quality of life, and good health,” he said.

As part of the campaign by STM Lottery Sdn Bhd, and in celebration of the upcoming Year of the Snake, the company launched its 38th Sports Toto Chinese New Year Ang Pow Donation Campaign.

The six-day campaign, which began on January 16, is being held across 50 cities and towns with the aim to assist over 19,000 underprivileged senior citizens nationwide.

Since its inception in 1988, the campaign has contributed over RM26.95 million, benefiting more than 474,550 elderly individuals in need across Malaysia.
