SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman, Clarence Ting, is disappointed that the national does not address the upgrading of secondary schools and hospitals in the state.
He expressed his thoughts to reporters after yesterday’s official opening of an annual open house of Sarawak Society for the Blind, Sibu Chapter by Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming.
He recalled that prior to the tabling of the budget he told New Sarawak Tribune about his wish for sufficient allocations for the projects.
“I was hoping that the 2020 budget would address the issues as these two things are closest to my heart. There is not much in the budget which I have wished for,” he said, visibly disappointed.
Ting, who is also the Sibu Chapter chairman of the Society, said more secondary schools needed to be built in the state so that there would only be one session instead of two currently due to the large number of students.
He said a single school session would give students time to get involved actively in sports.
“During my time with only a single session, we studied in the morning and played football, tennis or other games in the afternoon. The annual inter-school competition is important as it teaches students the meaning of winning and losing. If states in Malaya can have single sessions, why can’t we?” he asked.
On hospitals, he said they should be either upgraded or built new.
“I was hoping the budget would have funds for hospitals in our major towns, but there is none,” he said.
