KUCHING: A woman was constantly harassed with threatening calls by loan sharks after her brother who could not repay his personal loan, instead gave them her mobile phone number.
The victim has lodged a police report and asked Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) public complaint bureau chief Wilfred Yap to help her as she was fearful for her life.
Yap said anyone who made threatening calls could be charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation. He urged anyone who received a threat of injury to his person or property or to his family members from illegal moneylenders to immediately lodge a police report to enable the police to take action.
Telling people to stop borrowing money from illegal money lenders or “loan sharks” supposedly for a short term solution to their financial problems, Yap said this could lead them to unnecessary harassment. They would be charged very high interests by the illegal moneylenders which could cause problems, especially on their family members if they could not repay their loans.
Yap said SUPP Public Complaints Bureau was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone faced with such problems or those with problems of public interest.
