KUCHING: Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the inaugural Pet Walk 2025 with their pets (dogs, cats or fish).
Co-organised by Pertubuhan Komuniti Progresif Kuching and the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), the Pet Walk will be held at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) City Hall Foyer. on April 27 at 6.30 am.
SSPCA president Datin Donna Wee said the Kuching Division Health Office would support the programme by providing free health scanning services to all the participants and also by putting up an exhibition regarding public health to the crowd during the event.
“So far, many owners have registered their pets including cats, dogs and even a turtle, a rabbit and a fish.
“Dog owners are reminded that their pets must have valid rabies vaccinations in order to participate in this walk,” she said.
Donna was speaking at a press conference yesterday (March 20) at the MBKS building here.
She explained that the walk was held to commemorate World Stray Animal Day which was celebrated on April 4 each year.
“I wish to remind members of the public that we should all be responsible pet owners and in order to reduce the number of strays and abandoned animals, we should neuter our pets.
“SSPCA will be running a year-long subsidised neutering campaign for female cats and female dogs in order to address the issue of stray population management.
“Fifty per cent of the net profits generated from this Pet Walk will be donated to SSPCA to sustain the shelter’s operating costs,” she added.
In conjunction with the event, Donna stated that Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), together with MBKS, had scheduled the second Free Mass Anti-Rabies Vaccination, Licensing, Microchiping and Subsidised Neutering for Dogs programme at the Community Hall, MBKS from 8.30 am till 4.30 pm on April 12.
“The public are reminded to come for this event and all the other mass vaccination events to get their dogs vaccinated for free,” she added.
The Free Mass Anti-Rabies Vaccination, Licensing, Microchiping and Subsidised Neutering for Dogs programme will be officiated by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (Public Health and Housing) Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, while MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng will be the invited guest for the Pet Walk 2025.
