KUCHING: Samudra Hotel, located on Jalan Nanas, is bringing back its traditional kampung-style sungkey (breaking fast) and Set Talam Ombak dishes for the sixth consecutive year this Ramadan at Ombak Cafe.

According to Samudra Hotel’s Operations Manager, Khairul Syafiq Drahman, the Setalam concept was introduced in 2019 to provide a more friendly and affordable dining experience for customers.

Setalam refers to a communal dining style where meals are served on a shared platter (talam), allowing guests to enjoy a variety of traditional Malay dishes together at a fixed price.

“We want to create a warm and casual dining atmosphere with prices lower than buffets. Setalam is priced at RM79 for two people, which, when split, is only around RM35 per person,” he said.

Khairul explained that initially, each set in the Setalam menu had different prices depending on the type of dish. However, this year, the management has standardised the price for all sets to make it easier for customers.

“We found that by setting a fixed price, customers feel more comfortable choosing without worrying about price variations. This also takes into account the current economic situation,” he added.

Hotel Chef Norizan Mohamed, who hails from Pahang, said this year’s menu highlights the uniqueness of traditional dishes from Peninsular Malaysia, especially the signature Udang Goreng Kunyit (Turmeric Fried Prawns) and Daging Masak Lemak (Beef in Coconut Gravy).

“We want to bring the authentic taste of home-cooked meals to our customers. One of the most special dishes in our set menu is Daging Masak Lemak, which uses traditional ingredients like kerisik (toasted coconut paste) to enhance the richness and unique flavours,” he said.

“Last year, we included various seafood dishes, and this year we have maintained that concept while incorporating more traditional elements.

“The overall menu is carefully curated to ensure that each set contains a variety of dishes that customers can enjoy.”
