KUCHING: Sarawak’s para archers narrowly missed a podium finish in the recurve (70 metres) event at the Para SUKMA Games 2024, but coach Razmi Amit remains optimistic about their chances in the upcoming individual competitions on Wednesday (Sept 25).
Despite the disappointing outcome, Razmi expressed pride in his athletes’ determination and growing capabilities.
“While I had hoped for a medal in this category, luck wasn’t on our side,” he admitted.
“We’ll now focus on the individual competition and aim for a better result.”
He attributed the team’s initial struggles to nerves, which affected their performance in the first and second sets.
“However, they recovered well in the third set, but the gap was too large to overcome,” he said.
“Nonetheless, we’re satisfied with their efforts and believe they can do well in the next round.”
The team’s goal is to contribute at least one medal to Sarawak.
“We urge all Sarawakians to support our archers and pray for their success in the upcoming events,” he said.
The Sarawakian athletes will compete in the women’s recurve team quarter-final against Perak and the mixed recurve team quarter-final against Sabah tomorrow (Sept 24).
In the men’s recurve (70m) event, Muhammad Azaruddin Mat from Terengganu claimed gold with a score of 602 points, followed by Nurfaizal Hamzah from the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and Ahmad Jaffri Jamaluddin from Pahang.
Pahang’s Loh Chi Hui dominated the women’s recurve (70m) event, securing gold with a total score of 872 points.
Thilagavathy Krishnan from Kedah and Jaynie Jamirin from Sabah finished second and third, respectively.
