MIRI: The Borneo Jazz Festival 2024 began with an electrifying start last night (Nov 29) at the Musical Corridor of Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club here.
The opening night featured vibrant performances by Sarawak’s own Ta’Dan, followed by Gerhana Skacinta and WVC Jazz Ensemble, Indonesia’s Rio Sidik, and rhythm innovator Makaya McCraven from the United States.
To be gracing the stage is Malaysia’s legendary jazz queen Datuk Sheila Majid, headlining tonight’s lineup (Nov 30) in what promises to be an unforgettable performance.
During the opening ceremony, Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, representing Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, extended a warm welcome to attendees.
“Borneo Jazz 2024 showcases the magic of music that transcends boundaries. It’s a celebration for all – young and old, music lovers alike. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, including our sponsors, Miri City Council (MCC), and the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB),” said Ting.
“As we near the end of 2024, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2025. Let’s enjoy the music and celebrate together,” he added.
The Borneo Jazz Festival has become a hallmark event promoting local talent, cultural heritage, and tourism in Sarawak.
Miri City Council (MCC) Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang highlighted the event’s significance during his opening remarks.
“The Borneo Jazz Festival is more than music. It’s a platform to promote Borneo’s rich culture and tourism, aligning with Miri’s vision as ‘A Green, Smart, and Most Liveable International Resort City.’ Visitors will also experience our city’s beauty, hospitality, and cultural diversity.”
Also present at the ceremony were Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching Raden Sigit Witjaksono, and MCC Deputy Mayor Cr Ariffin Mohamad.
The festival, running from Nov 29 to Dec 1, promises three days of unforgettable music and cultural celebration, firmly placing Miri on the map as a global jazz destination.
