KUCHING: The Borneo Games are set to potentially begin this year, with plans revealed to revive the regional sports competition involving teams from Sabah, Brunei, Sarawak, Kalimantan, and Labuan.
Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said discussions are already underway to relaunch the games, which were held in the past but had ceased for a while.
“We plan to revive it for the sake of sports.
“We will start small, initially with four to five sports. As the event develops, we will look to expand it,” Abdul Karim told a press conference on the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup at Godown Amphitheatre Kuching Waterfront on Monday (Jan 6).
He said the first edition of the revived Borneo Games could take place this year, with Sarawak as the host state.
“We are still in the planning phase, working on finalising agreements with the regions involved, including Kalimantan, Brunei, Labuan, and Sabah,” he added.
Tthe Borneo Games were first held in 1954 and last took place in Brunei in 2009.
