KUCHING: The Librarians Association of Malaysia (PPM), in collaboration with Sekitar Kita, has launched the Borneo Adventures: Citizen Science in Action programme.

Supported by the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the initiative brings together key organisations, including Universiti Malaya Sustainable Development Center (UMSDC), American Corners Malaysia, Sarawak State Library, Sabah State Library, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Teknologi MARA Pahang Library and PPM Sabah & Sarawak Group.

According to a media statement issued, the programme demonstrates libraries’ role as community hubs and catalysts for citizen science, bridging the gap between scientific research and public engagement.

By hosting this initiative, libraries empower communities to actively participate in biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability while raising awareness about these critical issues.

The Sarawak leg of the programme spans three locations—Pustaka Negeri Sarawak in Kuching, Sibu and Miri—offering two-day workshops and field-based learning opportunities.

Participants, including secondary school students, university students, researchers, librarians and the public, will engage in biodiversity documentation and water quality testing using tools like iNaturalist and water testing kits.

Speaking on behalf of PPM, vice-president Dr Mohd Faizal Hamzah highlighted the programme’s goals.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to fostering community engagement and environmental awareness.

“With support from the US Embassy, we aim to inspire participants to preserve our natural heritage and promote sustainable practices for future generations.”

The programme also features expert sessions by academics from Universiti Malaya, including Prof Dr Kiran Kaur, Assoc Prof Dr Yanti Idaya Aspura and Assoc Prof Dr Zeeda Fatimah Mohamad.

Participants will visit natural reserves such as Kubah National Park, Bukit Lima Nature Reserve and Piasau Nature Reserve to conduct hands-on citizen science projects.

Programme leader Nurfarawahidah Badruesham noted the overwhelming community interest, with registrations quickly filling up after the launch.

“Citizen science addresses real-world environmental challenges, and libraries play a vital role in equipping communities with the tools and knowledge to tackle these issues effectively.”

Following its success in Sarawak, the programme will expand to Sabah in February 2025, continuing its mission to foster environmental stewardship and citizen science engagement.
