KUCHING: The Sarawak General Operations Force (Intelligence) on Tuesday foiled an attempt to smuggle out 102 gas cylinders.
GOF Battalion 11 commanding officer Supt Rosdi Inai told a press conference that two vehicles carrying the gas cylinders were apprehended by a team of GOF personnel and three Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers led by Insp Lokman Adli at the Immigration and Customs Complex Security (CIQS) at Tebedu.
The gas cylinders and gas were valued at RM179,300.
The team also arrested three suspects aged 48, 49 and 25. Two of the suspects tried to bribe the GOF and MACC personnel with RM10,000.
The case was referred to MACC Sarawak under Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 which carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the bribe value, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
The arrest and seizure under the Control of Supplies Act will be investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 read together with Article 3 (1) of the Control of Controlling Regulations 1974.
The accused will be charged under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and punishable under Section 22 (1) of the same act which provides a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment up to three years or both upon conviction.
Rosdi advised the public to share any information on suspected smuggling activities with the authorities.
