KUCHING: The state Ministry of Transport aspires to position Sarawak as a hub for green innovation in transport.
Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said this it will do by pioneering initiatives such as hydrogen-powered vehicles, as well as embarking on adopting smart logistics systems and advanced digital transport management platforms.
“Our vision is clear, that is to build a transport ecosystem that is inclusive, efficient and environmentally sustainable.
“By doing so, we aim to drive economic growth while safeguarding Sarawak’s natural heritage for future generations,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the Sarawak Transport Forum 2024 themed ‘Smart Transport Solutions: Driving Sarawak’s Future’ here on Tuesday (Dec 10).
Lee added that transport is more than just a means of moving people and goods, but a cornerstone of economic growth,
social inclusivity and environmental sustainability, a key catalyst for progress across multiple sectors.
“The Premier has emphasised the importance of environmental sustainability and digital transformation in driving Sarawak to be a developed state.
“In line with this aspiration, various digital transformation initiatives such as the Sarawak AI Centre has been established to spur innovation in artificial intelligence to pave the way for research and development, innovation and digital transformation across industries,” he said.
Sarawak, he said, is also exploring bold new frontiers, such as the space economy with the potential development of a space launchpad, as well as the development of high-level aviation skills.
At the global level, he said, the transport sector remains one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
“Addressing this challenge requires a transformative approach to meet the Net Zero Carbon Emission target by 2050.
“In Sarawak, we are also subscribed to the global targets and our Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 as well as the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030 outlines a transformative vision for Sarawak, where we are working to create a data-driven, innovation-led society characterised by
economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental sustainability.
“Within this framework, the transport sector is poised as a key enabler to accelerate the adoption of green technologies, enhancing regional and international connectivity, and fostering inclusive mobility for all communities,” he said.
He said Sarawak has been exploring hydrogen and renewable energy as part of its strategy for sustainable development and to diversify its energy resources.
“In summary, Sarawak is positioning itself as a potential hub for hydrogen and renewable energy, leveraging its natural resources and existing infrastructure while facing challenges that need to be addressed for successful development,” said Lee.
