MIRI: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has called for continued unity and vigilance against external forces driven by envy over Sarawak’s prosperity and achievements.

Speaking at a press conference following the PBB Northern Zone delegates meeting here on Saturday, he acknowledged that human nature often gives rise to jealousy, especially towards those who achieve significant progress.

“Jealousy is a common trait. It’s natural for people to feel envious when they see the success of others. So, it is crucial that we remain focused, maintain unity, and ensure that such sentiments do not disrupt our goals or the harmony within our party,” he said.

He noted that some might not wish to see the party grow stronger, but emphasised that the party’s commitment to progress and reform remains steadfast.
“We fight with determination because we aim to bring meaningful change to the party and the state,” he added.

Abang Johari highlighted the importance of unity within the party, recalling past challenges such as the 1987 political crisis, which threatened to fracture the party.

He credited the strong spirit of cooperation and resilience for PBB’s survival and growth.

“Thank God we have Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), which provides a solid foundation for our political direction. We also cooperate closely with the central government under the Malaysia Madani framework, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration,” he explained.

Abang Johari also underscored the need to invest in the youth as future leaders.

“We are opening doors for young people, providing them with training and opportunities to develop their skills. Leadership requires wisdom and experience, which must be nurtured over time,” he said.

He stressed the importance of preparing the younger generation to take on greater responsibilities, warning that poor decision-making could lead to undesirable consequences.

“Leadership wisdom is not something you find in books. It is acquired through experience and proper training,” he remarked.

On Sarawak’s geopolitical significance, Abang Johari pointed out the state’s role as a ‘vanguard’ in the South China Sea, emphasising the need for technological advancement and strategic foresight to navigate potential challenges in the region.

“We must harmonise our interests amidst rising geopolitical tensions. Sarawak must be prepared to anticipate and address future challenges, ensuring the state remains a leader in the region,” he added.
