ASAJAYA: Cases of road accidents in Samarahan, Asajaya and Simunjan area have increased since 2015.
Citing statistic from the Samarahan and Simunjan district police headquarters, Sadong Jaya assemblyman Aidel Lariwoo said cases of accidents in the three districts rose from 666 in 2015 to 1148 last year.
He said the figures for Samarahan were 2015 (572 cases), 2016 (619), 2017 (738) and 2018 (895).
In the same years, Asajaya registered 32, 62, 181 and 139 cases whereas Simunjan posted 62, 71, 80 and 114 cases.
“In Asajaya, there are a number of places identified as accident prone areas, especially at Kampung Sambir, Tambirat roundabout, Kampung Jemukan and Kampung Rebak junction. Some accidents were fatal,” he said during the Road Safety Campaign for Samarahan division in conjunction with the coming Christmas celebration, in front of An Najah Mosque, Asajaya yesterday.
Despite the worrying figures, Aidel conveyed his appreciation to the Sarawak government for improving road safety by upgrading roads from Samarahan, Asajaya all the way up to Sadong Jaya.
“With the upgrading of the roads, it is hope that there will be fewer accidents,” he said.
During the event, Aidel presented helmets to motorcyclists passing by Asajaya.
