BETONG: The Betong Division is gearing up to host the weightlifting event for the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) this August.

Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said preparations are actively underway to ensure sufficient accommodation for athletes and visitors.

“The event will be held at the Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan Sports Hall.

“We are expecting around 300 athletes and officials, and efforts are being made to ensure adequate accommodation for supporters and visitors from other areas.

“We will provide nearby accommodations, including homestays in Spaoh, Saratok, Sarikei, and Sri Aman,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the 21st SUKMA and Para SUKMA Baton Relay programme at Dewan Panglima Rentap here today (June 9).

Rentap, who is also Sukma’s Chef De Mission (CDM), assured that there are no concerns about accommodation shortages for the public attending the competition.

Earlier today, Betong marked the eighth stop for the SUKMA Baton Relay.

Approximately 500 runners from various government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), associations, and schools participated in the 3.5-kilometre run.

The event was led by Betong’s own SUKMA Para athlete, Mohd Ikmal Mohd Norhaslizam, and officiated by Betong MP Dr Richard Rapu.

Next week, the baton relay will continue its journey to the South, starting in Sri Aman, Serian, Kota Samarahan, and concluding in Kuching Waterfront on June 23.
