MIRI: The Youth Sport Talent 2022 by Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development Ministry (MYSED) held in Miri yesterday was seen as one of the best platform to expose and identify potentially talented teens in sports. It involved a total of 14 entries from various agencies and schools.
Deputy Minister for MYSED, Dr Rupin Lamat cum Lambir assemblyman expressed hopes that this platform could be used to unearth new talents from Sarawak in various sports disciplines and grooming them for the 2024 SUKMA in Johor.
“Perhaps, we could collaborate with schools to refine these athletes’ skills in sports,” said Ripin at the closing of the MYSED programme at Miri Indoor Stadium.
He added, until the SUKMA 2024, it is crucial for Sarawak to get ready and make the preparations from now, thereby grooming young athletes for the event.
Sports, he said, could become promising careers to athletes as long as they show commitment and determination.
Citing Sarawak’s athletes, such as national diver Pandelela Rinong Pamg and a former Malaysian sprinter Watson Nyambek, Ripin said , both of them have excelled in their respective disciplines at national and international level.
Ripin also presented prizes to winners who have taken part in the event competition. They included Shelton Munai who bagged RM2,000 in cash for his performance in dance skills; with first runner-up spot taken by Stepz Mama (RM1,500); second runner up going to Cimande Miri B – a silat duo (RM1,000); followed by Let’s Dance crew a Zumba dance troop with RM800 and Flat Rulez (consisting of duo showing their BMX’s skills) who received RM500.
