KUCHING: An elderly couple in Desa Wira here received essential items from Hope Place Kuching.
Phua Teck Choon, 69, and his wife has been living in a house which is built on a government-given land.
Phua has been bedridden for about a year due to a stroke that left half of his body paralysed.
He is still able to eat normal food, however, he is unable to walk or move much.
Phua, who used to be a lorry driver, had a stroke in 2017 and since then, his health deteriorates drastically.
His wife used to sell fruits but had to quit to take care of him. They do not have any income and only rely on the meagre assistance provided by their four adult children.
Although their children tried their best to help from time to time, they have their own families to take care of and since the Covid-19 pandemic started, they are financially unstable.
It is told that Phua used to have financial assistance from the Social Welfare Department (JKM), however, his wife has not updated the JKM account since 2017, thus their financial aid has been halted.
The non-governmental organisation is helping Phua and his wife by providing them adult diapers every three months.
