KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian has urged journalists and media practitioners in Sarawak to be active not only in mainstream newspapers but also on social media.

Speaking at the Kuching Division Journalist Association (KDJA) Chinese New Year Reunion Media Night dinner here on Monday, he said journalists in the state must be more professional in their approach and check their facts before disseminating the news to the public so as to curb fake news.

“We are in an era whereby we can check all the information to decide if the news is appropriate or not to be published.

“I want to remind the people in Sarawak about our freedom and we must not be swayed easily by all the fake news and propaganda,” he added.

Citing the Brexit issue in the United Kingdom and politics in Malaysia, Dr Sim said the UK has witnessed three prime ministers and Malaysia, five prime ministers in recent years.

“We must make Sarawak as the last bastion for such politics. For the last 20 years, we have never seen so many changes. We are witnessing history.

“Our late CM Datuk Sri Adenan Satem has left us a memorable legacy. That is why you as journalists must appreciate all these former leaders’ roles and do your part to ensure Sarawak is the most successful state and to retain Sarawak’s values and to remain united,” he added.

Some 200 journalists and former journalists attended the event.
