KUCHING: Donating blood is often seen as a small act with a powerful impact.  It gives people hope, as it can make a significant difference. It saves lives.

At Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), an average of 80 pints of blood is required daily.

In response to this urgent need, Big Grain Group, in collaboration with the Malaysian Red Crescent (Stampin Chapter) and the SGH Blood Bank, have organised a blood donation event.

‘Be A Hero – Blood Drive and Charity Fest’ took place at SJK Chung Hua No. 5 here.

The name aligns perfectly with the act itself which is being a hero by donating blood to those in dire need.

The event also united the community through acts of giving, such as recycling and donating items that were no longer needed.

This effort attracted blood donors and many others who came to contribute in different ways.

For many, the experience was deeply personal and a strong reminder of the power of community spirit.

“This is my company’s first time organising a blood drive, and we’re grateful it is going smoothly. Our team focused on raising awareness online, running ads and social media posts to spread the word. The aim isn’t just to collect blood, but to show how digital tools can drive real change. We also encouraged people to donate other items like clothes, recyclables and essentials. It’s about nurturing a culture of care.”

“I’ve donated blood nearly 50 times since my university days. This time, I came because SGH posted an urgent need for AB blood. Sometimes, I even receive direct calls from hospitals. Once, three different hospitals reached out to me in one day. If I’m able to help, I will. It’s not just about donating. It’s about knowing your blood could save a life.”

“I am excited. This is my first time donating blood. I heard about it through my company and decided to give it a go. It’s a small gesture, but it can really make a difference. I love how events like this bring people together for something so meaningful.”

“I used to donate blood every year until I turned 60. I’d go wherever the drives were held. It always made me feel lighter, like I’d done something good. I can’t donate anymore, but I still came today to show support. I hope more young people will take it up. Donating blood is a gift. It saves lives and brings hope.”
