BAU: Another iconic landmark is set to be built here — a bridge at the majestic Tasik Biru.

“With this bridge, we hope to lure more visitors to Bau. We also expect past visitors to return to the area to experience what Bau has to offer from time to time,” Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

The pedestrian bridge will replace an old wooden one that was demolished due to mining activities in the area about 30 years ago — Bau being a historically popular gold-mining region.

In light of the decades between the existence of the old bridge and the upcoming one, some visual differences are to be anticipated.

“We need a new design, which must be vibrant and relevant with today’s time and needs,” elaborated Henry.

He revealed that construction of the bridge is expected to commence early September this year, and the project is targeted to be completed within 12 months.

He also stated that the project was proposed in 2017, and it was approved early this year by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg with a budget of RM1 million.

“The Public Works Department has been entrusted to come up with the design for the bridge as well as project implementation,” Henry added.

The bridge is set to complement Tasik Biru’s status as a tourist attraction as lake is venue for the Tasik Biru Festival, which usually features water-based sports, recreational activities, exhibitions, food fairs and cultural performances.
