BAU: Bau District held its inaugural Car-Free Morning today (Nov 30), an initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, healthy living, and stronger community ties.
The event, officiated by Bau District Officer Constantine Gerald David Jonas, representing Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, drew 250 participants to the town centre, which was transformed into a pedestrian-friendly zone.
“This is a significant step for Bau, following in the footsteps of Kuching’s successful car-free weekends. It’s inspiring to see the community embracing this initiative, which aligns with our efforts to make Bau cleaner, greener, and more sustainable,” Constantine said.
He added the Car-Free Morning is part of Bau’s broader vision to foster a closer-knit community and promote eco-friendly practices.
“This isn’t just about closing roads for fun; it’s about creating a neighborhood that values tranquility, better air quality, and stronger bonds among residents,” he explained.
The event featured activities such as a 3-kilometre walk completed by most participants in under an hour and a lively Zumba session led by local instructors.
Constantine praised the community’s energy and highlighted how such events contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including reducing carbon footprints and improving air quality.
“This earth is only borrowed. It’s our responsibility to preserve it for the next generation. Events like this remind us of the importance of sustainability while encouraging a healthier, more active lifestyle,” he noted.
He also encouraged residents to adopt walking or cycling as alternatives to driving and to consider their roles in preserving the planet.
The community, he said, needs to embrace these changes and work together to create a sustainable culture.
