KUCHING: Pauline Abdullah, who began her business during the Covid-19 movement control order days, sells batik cakes in addition to being a hairstylist and makeup artist.
She operates from home, and said that “the biggest challenge I normally face is the increase in the price of raw materials.”
“I always promote my business on social media and I hire vendors at Gaya Boutique, MetroCity Matang,” she added.

Another challenge, she said, was competition from other batik cake producers, each with their own unique qualities.
“My batik cakes usually start from RM55. Prices also depend on the customer’s request, for example, as gifts.”
She would start making batik cakes after dawn. Orders usually come in around noon.
“In addition to making batik cakes, I am also a makeup artist and hairstylist, particularly for weddings.
“The one who never gets tired of giving encouragement and support is my husband. He would help deliver the batik cakes to customers and take care of our baby,” she beamed.
Pauline dreams of opening a shop in future, and her message to small traders out there: “Don’t give up.”
“When there are negative comments, we must accept them with an open heart and mind. Take it as a lesson in business. Remember, in business, we must have honesty and sincerity,” she added.
