MIRI: Batik Air has officially launched its direct flight service between Kuala Lumpur and Miri, marking the airline’s fourth destination in Sarawak after Kuching, Sibu, and Bintulu.

The inaugural flight, which landed at Miri Airport (MYY) at 8.45 am today, carried eight crew members and 63 passengers.

Upon arrival, passengers were welcomed with a vibrant ceremony, including traditional bead garlanding organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), symbolising Miri’s cultural richness and hospitality.

Sarawak Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin emphasised the importance of this new route in a statement today.

“The addition of airlines serving routes between West Malaysia and Sarawak not only enhances travel convenience but also provides new opportunities for economic growth. Miri, as a tourism city and an industrial hub, stands to benefit significantly,” he said.

He said Miri is widely recognised as the northern gateway to Sarawak and a key entry point for exploring the state’s tropical rainforests, pristine national parks, and UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Notable attractions accessible from Miri include Gunung Mulu National Park, home to the world’s largest cave chamber, just a 30-minute flight away; Loagan Bunut National Park, Sarawak’s largest natural lake; and Lambir Hills National Park, one of the most biodiverse areas globally. Additionally, Niah National Park, recently designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers visitors a glimpse into ancient human civilisation.

The launch of Batik Air’s KL-Miri route aligns with Miri’s growing role as a strategic hub for tourism and industrial activity.

The relocation of Shell Malaysia’s headquarters to Miri further underscores the city’s significance, drawing visitors and investors alike to the region.

“This development highlights the confidence of airlines and major industry players in Sarawak, particularly in Miri’s potential as a preferred investment destination, especially for the oil and gas industry,” said Lee.

The minister also encouraged Batik Air to consider expanding its routes to include international destinations, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to Sarawak’s connectivity and development.

Efforts to enhance Miri Airport’s capacity are already underway.

In September 2024, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim approved plans for the airport’s expansion to address its growing passenger numbers, which reached nearly 2.5 million in 2019, exceeding its designed capacity.

The proposed upgrades include a terminal extension, additional check-in counters, a new baggage handling system, improved passenger boarding bridges, and enhancements to the Rural Air Services (RAS) area.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, Miri MP Chiew Choon Man, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Transport Sarawak Datu Wong Hee Sieng, and Batik Air general manager for Ground Operations Ariff Abdul Aziz were among those present to witness the historic launch.

Batik Air’s new service complements existing operators such as Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and MASwings, providing greater options for passengers and boosting Miri’s accessibility.

“Air connectivity is vital for Sarawak, given its geographical isolation,” said Lee, adding that with increased flight frequency, Sarawak can attract more travellers and cargo to Miri, reducing business and travel inconveniences.

“This positions Sarawak as a key player in the global air travel network,” he said.

As Sarawak continues to develop its aviation infrastructure, Batik Air’s entry is expected to play a pivotal role in driving the region’s tourism, commerce, and investment opportunities.
