DARO: More communities in the state will soon benefit from improved infrastructure as the Batang Rajang Bridge is set for its soft opening next month, just ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the early opening would allow the local community to start using the bridge in Sarikei ahead of its full completion.

He added that the construction of the bridge is expected to be fully completed by March, enabling direct connectivity between Sarikei and Sibu.

“The soft opening will allow the public to use the bridge starting this March, before Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“This marks an important milestone in our efforts to enhance road networks through the construction of highways and bridges, a vision we have long aspired to achieve,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after officiating at the opening ceremony of the Muara Lassa Bridge here Saturday (Feb 22).

Earlier, Abang Johari said Sarawak is funding its bridge projects independently, including the Muara Lassa Bridge and Batang Rajang Bridge.

“We are using our own funds, which is beneficial because it means we are not imposing toll charges on users. This allows the public to use the bridges for free.

“This is possible due to Sarawak’s strong financial position, enabling us to give back to the people.

“Alhamdulillah, during this Ramadan, the people will benefit from various initiatives, including better roads, bridges, and the Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak (SKAS),” he said.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas previously announced that the Batang Rajang Bridge and the 17-kilometre Pasi-Sibu/Tanjung Manis Road are expected to be completed by March this year.

He said the RM320 million project, which is part of Sarawak’s coastal road development under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government, will significantly reduce travel distance and time.
