SARIKEI: The long-awaited dream of Sarikei and Kuala Rajang residents for better road connectivity is now a reality with the construction of the Batang Rajang Bridge.
The new infrastructure not only enhances travel convenience but also drives economic growth in the surrounding areas.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister cum Sarikei Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said the bridge serves as a vital link connecting Sarikei to Tanjung Manis, easing daily commutes and business operations for locals.
“I extend my gratitude to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, for approving funds for this bridge.
“It is a strategic link, particularly in connecting Sarikei to the Central Zone,” he said when met during the Batang Rajang Bridge soft launch event today.
He pointed out that the government’s success in developing road infrastructure is the result of strong collaboration and support from the local community, who understand the importance of development for collective wellbeing.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas officiated the soft launch of the 1,440-meter bridge, built at a cost of RM321.4 million.
The opening of the bridge will reduce the travel distance from Sarikei to Tanjung Manis from 122 kilometres (km) to 53km, and from Bintangor to Tanjung Manis from 108km to 60km.
In addition, the travel time from Sarikei to Tanjung Manis is also cut from two hours 30 minutes to just 45 minutes, while the journey from Bintangor to Tanjung Manis is reduced from two hours to one hour.
Meanwhile, Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Deputy Minister cum Kuala Rajang assemblyman Datuk Len Talif Salleh agreed that the new bridge is expected to boost the economy of the surrounding areas by facilitating the movement of goods and agricultural products to a wider market
“The direct connection to Tanjung Manis Port will strengthen trade activities, attract more investments, and contribute to the development of the tourism sector,” he said.
Len added that in terms of the wellbeing of the population, this infrastructure also opens up opportunities for better access to basic facilities such as schools, hospitals as well as job and business opportunities while providing thousands of daily commuters with a safer and more comfortable journey.
