SARIKEI: The Repok Basketball Club is set to receive an additional RM100,000 for the construction of a covered basketball court at Jalan Meranti, thanks to the continuous support of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii.
Speaking about the initiative, Huang emphasised his commitment to sports development here.
“Basketball has always been a passion for the local youth, and I am committed to ensuring they have a conducive and well-equipped environment to hone their skills.
“This additional funding will help complete the covered court, allowing the community to enjoy the sport regardless of weather conditions,” said the Sarikei MP.
Recently, Huang, who is also Repok assemblyman, visited the site to inspect the project’s progress and engaged with the club’s committee members and youth players.
The initiative is part of his long-term efforts to enhance sports infrastructure in the region.
In 2024, a Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) allocation of RM500,000 was provided to upgrade basketball court facilities, including spectator seating, restrooms, a storage room, resurfaced concrete flooring, and other essential amenities, all of which have now been fully completed.
Through RTP, Huang has allocated significant funding for basketball development here over the years.
In 2018, he allocated RM500,000, followed by another RM500,000 in 2020.
In 2021, an additional RM150,000 was provided, while RM200,000 was allocated in both 2022 and 2023.
In 2024, a substantial RM500,000 was given for further improvements, and in 2025, RM100,000 has been committed to support the final phase of the project.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Sarikei Division Basketball Association, Hii Kah Hock, expressed gratitude for Huang’s unwavering support for basketball development, including the construction of the covered court and various other facilities.
“His continuous support has significantly improved the sporting facilities in our area, and we truly appreciate his dedication to the local youth,” said Hii.
