A detective carrying the remains of the female baby in Samarahan.

KUCHING: A baby girl was found dead with its umbilical cord attached in a large bin at Vista Ilmu in Samarahan yesterday. The baby was placed in a box covered with a piece of cloth. Samarahan police chief, DSP Lee Chong Chern described it as a cruel act and have yet to find the suspect.

Police have been making queries from nearby residents where the baby was found. He revealed that the baby was found by individuals who were looking for scrap metals in the bin.

He also said that evidences have been collected from the scene and called on members of the public to come forward with any information to assist the police.

The suspect can be charged under Section 318 of the Penal Code which states that whoever by secretly burying or otherwise disposing of the dead body of a child, whether such child dies before or after or during its birth, intentionally conceals or endeavours to conceal the birth of such child shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine or both.
