LAWAS: The underprivileged should come forward to apply for the assistance they need without waiting for others to help.

According to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, the Sarawak government has implemented many welfare programmes that target various levels of society to ensure their needs are met.

Among the programmes, he said, were Bantuan Khas Sarawakku Sayang (BKSS) 1.0 up to BKSS 9.0, with a total of around RM6.9 billion to help those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Many programmes have been implemented to help the targeted groups, including the elderly, single mothers, orphans, people with disabilities, caregivers of the disabled, and those suffering from illnesses,” he said.

Awang Tengah, who is also the Bukit Sari assemblyman, said this at the recent Program Ziarah UKAS Semarak Ramadan Limbang.

Meanwhile, he also stressed the importance of improving one’s skills and knowledge as one of the steps to overcome the issue of poverty.

“This human capital will decide our success, and working hard is crucial. Success is not something that can be attained easily.

“Do not give up easily. This is an attitude that will help us succeed for our own good,” he said.

Also present were Awang Tengah’s wife Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud, Lawas Member of Parliament Datuk Henry Sum Agong, Lawas district officer Ladin Atok, special administrative officer of the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) Datuk Takun Sunggah and political secretary to the Premier Awangku Jinal Abedin Pengiran Jawa.
