KUCHING: A joint operation between the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, and Sarawak Energy in February uncovered electricity theft at two houses in Jalan Tun Razak here.

During the operation, special tools were utilised to detect the underground direct tapping, which eventually lead to the discovery of the crime.

“The enforcement team then had to hack the concrete pillars at both sites to locate the direct tapping cables hidden underground, which were connected directly from the incoming main wiring,” a statement said.

“All direct tapping cables were dismantled and seized as evidence.

“Police reports were lodged, and investigations are being carried out to determine the extent of losses incurred by Sarawak Energy.”

The owners of both premises were present during the raids and would be assisting in the investigation, it added.

“Any individuals found to have been involved in the theft of electricity will be prosecuted under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance.
