KUCHING: The Joint Meeting of the International Primatological Society – Malaysian Primatological Society 2023 (IPS-MPS ‘23) is set to attract around 800 delegates in person and online.

The event is aimed at students, researchers, scientists, professionals and those interested in primate study and conservation from all around the world, according to a press release on Thursday (Feb 9).

The renowned primatology conference with a history dating back to 1966 will take place from Aug 19-25 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

“With the theme ‘Primates and People: A New Horizon’, the 29th edition of this biennial congress will span over seven days consisting of carefully curated keynote and plenary sessions, oral and poster presentations, roundtable discussions, workshops, exhibits, technical site visits around Sarawak, and more.

“We hope to showcase the research and conservation initiatives on wild primates around Malaysia and the region and to share findings with our international colleagues,” said MPS president Muhammad Zaki Zainol.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Forestry Corporation chief executive officer Zolkipli Mohamad Aton announced that early bird registration is USD250 (approximately RM1,079) for Malaysians and now open until March 31.

“We are also accepting abstract submissions for oral and poster presentations until March 1. We are excited to bring this congress to Sarawak, as it will also help to create more awareness of the Sarawak government and Sarawak Forestry Corporation’s efforts in the conservation of primates.

“We look forward to the global and regional community networking with our Sarawakian researchers, to exchange ideas and learning from each other,” Zolkipli said.
