MADRID (Spain): Atletico Madrid face a daunting task as they prepare to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Real Madrid in their Champions League last-16 second-leg clash on Wednesday.

Historically, Atletico have never eliminated their city rivals in the competition, suffering heartbreak in multiple encounters, including the 2014 and 2016 finals.

Real Madrid, 15-time European champions and the current title holders, have always found a way to prevail in this fixture.

Despite the odds, Atletico remain hopeful, fuelled by their motto of “courage and heart” and the backing of nearly 70,000 fans at the Metropolitano.

This will be the first Champions League clash between the two sides at Atletico’s new stadium, adding to the significance of the match.

In the first leg, Brahim Diaz secured Madrid’s lead, but with a tight scoreline, Diego Simeone’s men believe they can capitalise at home, just as they did last season against Inter Milan.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti acknowledges the challenge of playing at the Metropolitano, especially with the expected intensity from Atletico fans.

His side, however, will be bolstered by the return of Jude Bellingham and strong form from Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, who both scored in Madrid’s recent league win over Rayo Vallecano.

Meanwhile, Atletico suffered a painful 2-1 defeat at Getafe, but Simeone is confident in his team’s ability to recover.

With history and form favouring Madrid, Atletico must produce something special to reach the quarter-finals.

A fierce and emotional battle is expected, as both teams fight to keep their European dreams alive. – AFP
