KUCHING: The Sarawak Community Policing Association (SCPA) applauded the policemen who arrested two of the three armed robbers in Taman Serena Jelita at Tuman Tunku in Miri on Friday. Its chairman Datuk John Lau Pang Heng said the policemen who were attached to the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) unit had acted quickly upon receiving an alert.

“The policemen were conducting neighbourhood patrols when the robbery happened. “Their instant response and efficient actions need to be complimented,” he told New Sarawak Tribune, yesterday.

He called on the police department to reward the policemen who had successfully arrested the suspects.  “They should be promoted to a higher rank because of their bravery, or be rewarded with a bonus,” he stressed.

He said he is convinced that the police would be able to arrest the third suspect soon.

Lau said that was why police patrolling is very important as they help to keep watch over the community’s safety and prevent crime.

“SCPA has 10 motorbikes and our members would use them to patrol the neighbourhood during the day and sometimes for 24 hours. Sometimes we would also invite the police force to join us.

“And in line with the SCPA slogan ‘Our Community, Our Responsibility’, our neighbourhood’s safety is indeed our responsibility as we help to be the ears and eyes for the police,” he said.

On another note, Lau also praised Miri district police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah and Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Azman Yusof for their excellent leadership in leading the police force.

During the shootout, Corporal William Bell Jol was hit in his upper left arm when the suspects shot him. The two robbers, aged 35 and 50, were arrested.

Police are now on the hunt for the third suspect, Ng Cheng Hui, 37.
