KUCHING: A preliminary assessment of infrastructure damage caused by the recent floods in the state will be presented at the Sarawak Cabinet meeting next week, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
According to him, the presentation will take place before the report is submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
“Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has directed that this report be brought to the Cabinet before being submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
“This assessment covers damage to schools, clinics, houses, hospitals, roads, and other infrastructure affected by the floods,” he said.
He said this during a press conference after receiving the Sarawak Flood Disaster Aid 2025 contribution from the National Welfare Foundation (YKN) at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today (Feb 13).
Present to officiate at the handover was Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, who is also the chairman of YKN.
Uggah, who is also the chairman of the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), explained that currently, eight Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) are still in operation, housing 229 families with a total of 677 evacuees.
Since the disaster began, he said, a total of 86 PPS have been opened, including several centres for landslide victims, accommodating 4,966 families and a total of 16,700 evacuees.
“Now, most PPS have been closed, and the evacuees have returned to their homes, with only two centres still operating, namely in Miri and Mukah,” he said.
He also mentioned that SDMC has so far received RM12.8 million from the Prime Minister’s Office, RM10 million from the Sarawak government, and RM2.45 million contributed by the private sector, including Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS).
Meanwhile, he said that flood-affected households would receive RM1,000 in assistance per Head of Household (KIR) soon.
He added that the aid would be distributed through the respective District Offices and Resident Offices, benefiting a total of 4,966 KIR across Sarawak.
“This assistance will be disbursed as soon as possible since we have already received the allocation, but we are still waiting for the finalised list,” he added.
