SIBU: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has called on the community to continue strengthening and preserving art culture and national heritage to the best of their ability.
He said art, culture and heritage is a priceless treasure that must be passed on to the next generation to ensure it does not disappear with time, while also serving as a catalyst for heritage-based tourism.
“It is undeniable that the tourism and cultural sectors play a crucial role in helping to develop Malaysia’s economy, in line with current economic growth.
“Tourists who come to Malaysia will leave with beautiful memories and delightful experiences, especially from the warmth shown by the Malaysian people,” he said.
He said in his speech read by his representative Political Secretary to Premier of Sarawak Joshua Ting during the opening of Karnival Kebudayaan Durin at Durin Bazaar here Saturday (April 27).
Tiong who is Bintulu MP stressed that one of Malaysia’s strengths lies in its multi-ethnic population and diverse culture, making the country one of the popular international tourist destinations.
Meanwhile, Tiong welcomed any suggestions or proposals to include the carnival in the Sarawak tourism calendar, similar to the Borneo Cultural Festival in Sibu, as the number of tourist attractions visiting it increases every year.
“Borneo, especially Sarawak, is known worldwide for its rich biodiversity, and it is our responsibility to showcase and protect this beautiful treasure.
“To achieve this goal, close cooperation and collaboration between the federal government and the Sarawak government, as well as all stakeholders including NGOs and individuals, are crucial,” he added.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Main Committee and the Executive Committee for their effort in organising the three-day carnival starting from April 26-28.
“I believe that throughout these three days, the carnival will strengthen the spirit of unity, brotherhood, friendship, and community among the people of various ethnicity, race, and culture in Sarawak, especially in Durin.
“I hope that events like this will bring about positive changes and benefits to the local community, particularly in terms of economic development, further harnessing the potential in Durin.
“I also hope that events like this will foster interest among local residents to venture into business, no matter how small. If we don’t start with small things, how can we achieve greater success?” he said.
Also present were Political Secretary to Sarawak Premier Fung Kok Shiun @ Brian Fung, Organising Chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew, and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) Chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai.
