The welfare of the people is the ultimate law.

Marcus Tullius Cicero, Roman statesman and philosopher

Today marks the eighth anniversary of Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as Sarawak’s Premier. Affectionately known as Abang Jo, his journey from a humble assemblyman in Satok to one of Malaysia’s most transformative leaders is nothing short of extraordinary.

I have had the privilege of knowing him since his early days in politics – and those of us who have met him – can attest to his unwavering dedication to Sarawak and its people. Over the past eight years, his leadership has redefined what it means to serve with integrity, vision and inclusivity, elevating Sarawak to unprecedented heights of progress.

Abang Jo’s integrity and humility have been his defining characteristics. Even as he holds one of the highest offices in the state, he remains approachable and grounded. He has always prioritised listening to the people and understanding their needs, a rare trait in politics today.

His ability to simplify complex ideas into actionable solutions has made him relatable to the masses and deeply respected by leaders and constituents alike. He is not just a politician; he is a servant leader who places the welfare of the people above all else.

His care and compassion are evident in his actions. A personal example I cherish is his condolence visit following my wife’s passing, a gesture that showcased his deep humanity and empathy. Moments like these illustrate the essence of the Premier as a person – a leader who genuinely connects with those he serves. This quality of his is what endears him to so many, making him not just a leader of the people but a leader for the people.

Abang Jo’s tenure as Premier has been a period of remarkable achievements and transformative initiatives. Since taking office on Jan 13, 2017, he has set a clear vision for Sarawak, one that blends progress with sustainability. His introduction of digital initiatives, such as Sarawak Pay (now S Pay Global), and the establishment of TV Sarawak (TVS) have not only modernised Sarawak but also positioned it as a leader in digital innovation within Malaysia.

These steps have ensured that Sarawak remains competitive in an increasingly digital world while preserving its unique cultural identity.

His leadership in green energy is unparalleled, making Sarawak a pioneer in the hydrogen economy and renewable energy sector. The state’s foray into hydrogen as a clean energy source has garnered international attention, positioning Sarawak as a model for sustainable development.

The soon-to-be-launched Sarawak-owned airline is another bold initiative aimed at boosting tourism and connectivity, further demonstrating his commitment to economic growth and global integration.

Abang Jo’s emphasis on inclusivity and fairness has been a hallmark of his governance. He has strengthened the role of Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR), ensuring that all religious communities are respected and supported, even as Islam remains the official religion of the country. This approach reflects his belief that unity in diversity is Sarawak’s greatest strength and is a cornerstone of its progress. His policies are proof that no community is left behind, creating a harmonious and equitable society.

He is committed to rural development which is evident in the extensive infrastructure projects undertaken during his tenure. From roads and telecommunications to the construction of 16 major bridges statewide, including the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge and Batang Saribas 2 Bridge, his administration has given priority to connect Sarawak’s rural areas to its urban centres.

These initiatives not only improve accessibility but also open up economic opportunities for rural communities that have long been marginalised.

Education and healthcare have also been key priorities under his leadership. The establishment of international schools and the promise of free university education starting in 2026 reflect his vision for a better future for Sarawakians. His government has also made strides in improving healthcare access, particularly in rural areas, ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, his administration introduced the Sarawakku Sayang Special Aids (BKSS) programme, which provided billions of ringgit in relief to ease the burden on Sarawakians. This initiative, coupled with the Kenyalang Gold Card for senior citizens, highlights his concern for the well-being of the people, particularly during times of crisis.

The Premier’s visionary leadership extends to finance and governance. The establishment of the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund, Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS), and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) are landmark achievements that secure Sarawak’s financial independence and long-term growth.

His ability to reclaim Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) has been instrumental in ensuring fair revenue sharing and greater autonomy for the state.

From a global perspective, Abang Jo is recognised as a trailblazer in renewable energy and sustainable development. His policies have placed Sarawak on the map as a leader in these fields, earning the state international recognition and admiration. Nationally, he is seen as a leader who balances local aspirations with national interests, fostering strong ties with the federal government while steadfastly advocating for Sarawak’s rights.

Personally, one of the most memorable moments in my career as a journalist was witnessing Abang Jo’s victory during the 1998 PBB triennial assembly, where he contested for the deputy presidency against the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.

It was a defining moment that foreshadowed his rise as a key leader in Sarawak. His journey from those early days to his current role as Premier reflects his resilience, determination and vision.

Abang Jo’s dreams for Sarawak are ambitious yet achievable. He envisions Sarawak as a harmonious, self-reliant and progressive region within Malaysia, leading the way in renewable energy, digital transformation and sustainable development.

His leadership has laid the groundwork for these aspirations, and it is my hope – and the hope of many Sarawakians – that he continues to lead for many more terms, ensuring that these dreams become a reality.

As we celebrate his eighth anniversary as Premier, it is clear that Abang Jo’s legacy is one of transformation, innovation and unity. His leadership has not only propelled Sarawak forward but also inspired a sense of pride and possibility among its people.

Abang Jo is more than just a leader for today; he is a statesman for the ages, whose contributions will shape Sarawak for generations to come.

Happy 8th Anniversary, YAB.
