MIRI: The arc entrance at the Sungai Tujuh Immigration checkpoint in Kuala Baram has been completed.
Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said during the launching of the arch, the project approved by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg would coincide with the proposed reopening of the border by the Brunei government.
“So we are happy that the border is being reopened and we welcome Bruneians friends to come over; we welcome the bilateral movement of people,” said Yii who is also Pujut assemblyman.
He continued by saying that Miri City Council (MCC) would also further enhance the surrounding area’s landscape as it approaches the Sungai Tujuh checkpoint, and it will provide a new perspective of the surrounding area .
The official flower of Miri City, the periwinkle, serves as the inspiration for the design while the oil platform from the top elevation and on both side elevations symbolises Miri’s status as an oil and gas hub.
Costing RM390,000 the arc project with a height of 5.5m and 17m wide was initiated on February 8 and was completed on May 7.
According to an earlier report, Brunei plans to fully reopen both of its land and sea borders on August 1 of this year. However, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei Datuk Dr Mohd Amin lew Abdullah, said that the reopening of both the land and sea borders would depend on the COVID-19 situation.
Also present during the launching of the arch was MCC’s deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad.
