SIBU: The Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) facilitated the transportation of 48 students, 14 teachers, and examination officers to three secondary schools for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams today.
APM Sibu district officer Major Wan Mohd Jabir Wan Mohd Badrudin said the mission involved transporting individuals to SMK Lanang and SMK Kwong Hua in Sibu, and SMK Sedaya in Kanowit, due to flooded and impassable roads leading to the schools.
Despite the challenging conditions, all students, teachers, and examination officers were transported safely, and the operations ran smoothly.
A coordinated effort saw 38 students and six examination officers transported to SMK Kwong Hua at 7.30 am using an APM lorry and a MAF pick-up truck. Another six students were taken to SMK Lanang at 7.15 am using MAF lorry and pick-up truck
For SMK Sedaya in Kanowit, a three-tonne APM lorry ferried four students along with eight teachers and officers to the school at 7.40 am.
Meanwhile, in Kapit last night (Jan 14), the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) stepped in to evacuate a female student from her longhouse in Sungai Sibau, Jalan Bukit Goram.
They received a request from a teacher in SMK Kapit 2 at 10.34 pm to evacuate the student to the school’s female hostel as the road leading to her home was submerged under four feet of water.
Using a fibre boat, the team transported her safely to the hostel, where she was handed over to the warden.
Fortunately, the longhouse remained safe from rising waters due to its elevated position, about seven feet above the flood line.
Despite the challenges posed by the floods, the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies ensured students could sit for their crucial exams without delay.
