‘Apam balik’ sellers fined for assaulting fellow vendor

KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here fined two local vendors RM1,400 in default five months in prison for assaulting another vendor during a misunderstanding last month.

Dzul Mizal Asley Shah Abdullah, 25, and Samsul Wahed, 37, who both sell ‘apam balik’ (turnover pancake), pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to a charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of one year’s imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction.

They were accused of causing injury to a 53-year-old man along Jalan Gambier at around 2.50 pm on March 26.

According to the case facts, the victim was involved in a scuffle with Dzul. When Samsul attempted to intervene, the situation escalated and both men ended up attacking and punching the victim.

The victim sustained bruises, back and head injuries.

A police report was later lodged for further action, and investigation later confirmed through CCTV footage that the altercation led to the victim’s injuries.
