BAU: The annual Bung Bratak Day, celebrated on Wednesday (May 1), pays homage to the Bidayuh ancestors who inhabited the mountain approximately 750 years ago.
Bung Bratak Heritage Association (BBHA) chairman Datuk Peter Minos said this occasion also serves as a tribute to the enduring legacy of the Bidayuh forebears.
He pointed out the important role that celebrations play in fostering collective remembrance and respect as it contributes toward preserving and honouring one’s history and culture.
“One of the main reasons why we organise the Bung Bratak Day is for us to show respect to our ancestors. We would not be who and what we are today if it wasn’t for them.
“It is important for people to respect their history and heritage because if we do not, it means we have not anchored in our life. History and heritage are very important so you must always honour them, so you will always remember your roots.”
He made these remarks in his welcoming speech during the launch of Bung Bratak Day.
Among the activities lined up during the celebration were mini museum showcasing Bidayuh culture, traditional musical instruments, the mini Bratakthon, bamboo stilts walking as well as music and dance performances.
At the same time, visitors who comprised different races were also treated to a spread of local delights.
Minos assured that the BBHA will continue to organise the Bung Bratak Day every year on May 1.
He expressed appreciation and gratitude to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts for their continuous support.
“Last year, Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah joined us for the Bung Bratak Day, and he truly enjoyed himself. He promised that his ministry will continue to support this event and we appreciate his support,” he said.
